EU STOCKS open the week higher

European stock markets headed for a fourth straight day of gains on Monday, as investors welcomed the latest round of corporate news and took inspiration from Asia, where most markets closed firmly higher. 


The Stoxx Europe 600 index moved 0.2% higher, building on a 0.7% advance from Friday. 

European indexes were also on the rise, with France’s CAC 40 index up 0.3% and Germany’s DAX 30 index rising 0.3%. 


French industrial production declined 0.3% in December after climbing a revised 1.2% the previous month, according to Insee. Manufacturing production stagnated after rising 0.2% in November. 

The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index added 0.2% to 6,582.65. 


Shares of L’Oréal SA gained 4.7% after a report late Friday that Nestle SA is looking into ways to reduce its $30 billion stake in the French cosmetics firm. A representative from Nestlé wasn’t immediately available to comment. 

Nokia Oyj climbed 3.9% after the phonemaker settled all pending patent litigation with HTC. Under the agreement, HTC will make payments to Nokia, the Finnish company said. 

Akzo Nobel NV gained 1.5% after Citigroup lifted the paints and coatings firm to buy from neutral. 

Catlin Group Ltd. rose 2.3%. The insurance underwriter said gross written premiums in 2013 rose to $5.31 billion from $4.97 billion a year earlier. 

Securitas declined 3.3% after it posted fourth-quarter net income of 493.9 million kronor ($76 million), missing analysts’ average estimate that called for 528 million kronor. 

ArcelorMittal (MT) slid 1.5% after Bank of America Corp. cut the world’s biggest steelmaker to neutral from buy.
