Advanced Micro Devices Inc. shares slumped 13%. The chip
maker, which has also been hurt by the PC slowdown, said Thursday it
swung to a loss in its second quarter.
Intuitive Surgical Inc. shares skidded 14%. The company,
which makes robotic surgery systems, posted a decline in second-quarter
profit that, along with quarterly revenue, missed analyst expectations.
Microsoft shed more than 9%. The tech company swung to a
profit in its fiscal fourth quarter but sharply missed analyst
expectations for profit and revenue. The company attributed part of its
miss to the slowdown in the PC market.
Google Inc. slid 3.7% after late Thursday reported a
second-quarter profit of $9.71 billion, or $9.54 a share, while revenue,
minus traffic acquisition costs, totaled $11.1 billion. Both earnings
and sales fell short of analysts’ estimates.
Boeing Co. shares fell 1.7% after yet another incident with
the Dreamliner. Late Thursday, a Japan Airlines flight from Boston to
Tokyo had to return to the airport after a maintenance indicator light
signaled a potential problem with the fuel pump.
